What is Pilates?
Pilates is a series of exercises resulting in extraordinary conditioning of the entire body. The developer, Joseph Pilates, originally called it “Contrology”. His belief was that fewer precise movements, “with thought” were more beneficial than many repetitions done “without thought”. Pilates demonstrated that working the CORE with intention resulted in elongating and balancing the muscles, lower back and hips into what he referred to as the body’s “Powerhouse”. Want to try it? How does Pilates differ from other forms of exercise?
First of all, Pilates is a low impact strength workout, whether you are in a class setting or on a Pilates Reformer. Students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds will learn to work their entire body symmetrically, which will improve posture and core stability.
As you bring your body into balance, you decrease the risk of injury and reduce pain. For this reason, the Pilates method is incorporated into many rehabilitation programs. Clinicians, surgeons, sports medicine clinics and athletic trainers are realizing the positive effects Pilates exercises have on restoring a body back to health.
What is the difference between Pilates and yoga?
Briefly, in Pilates there is an absence of holding poses. Pilates is considered a strength workout where quality is more important then quantity! Most exercises are repeated 3 to 10 times. In addition, the “mind/body” connection in Pilates focuses on the precision of movement rather than on the meditation, as in yoga.
